The Maison de l’Imprimerie printing museum was founded in 2010 by Mr Jacques Driot, a former student of the Estienne school of graphic arts (1957-1961) and a now retired printer/typographer. It is located in the town of Rebais, close to Paris, in a region that has a long history of papermaking and printing: a considerable number of paper mills used to be located in the nearby Morin river valley starting in the mid-17th century (the last one closed down in 2019), and the nearby town of Coulommiers used to be home to one of the largest printing factories in France, which printed millions of textbooks, pocket books, children’s books and many others between 1820 and 2010.

The premises of the museum are located in a former train station, disused as such since 1943. The building is owned by the town of Rebais, the artifacts on display belong to the private collection of Mr Driot and the museum is run as a not-for-profit association.

All the visits are guided. The printing equipment we have is in working order and, apart from being open to visitors, the museum occasionally works in partnership with local secondary schools to organise letterpress workshops. It sometimes also collaborates with graphic artists and has on several occasions set up temporary off-site exhibitions at the request of institutions such as public libraries.

The collection gathered at the Maison de l’Imprimerie amongst others includes an 1837 Stanhope press, an Intertype slug composition caster, a Heidelberg windmill, several pedal-cranked platen presses, a large paper cutter and, of course, plenty of metal and wooden type. It also includes slightly more unusual items, such as a watermarking cylinder, a stamp perforator… and even a small collection of typewriters!
