The Cheongju Early Printing Museum is Korea’s only museum dedicated to early printing culture. It is situated at the former site of Heungdeoksa Temple (Historic Site No. 315) in Cheongju, where Jikji, the world’s oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type, was once printed. In March 1992, the Cheongju City Government inaugurated the museum at the present site, to inform the world that the Korean people are a people of culture who invented the world’s first movable metal type and to better preserve this proud cultural heritage that stands out in the history of humanity. In June of 2000, the museum expanded into a new building with two stories and a basement (Total floor area: 4,868 m2). Cheongju Early Printing Museum aims to promote human culture through the globalization of Jikji. To this end, we at the museum are actively engaged in the research, education, public promotion and globalization of Korea’s early printing culture. The Museum also operates the Modern & Contemporary Printing Exhibition Hall, Metal Type Training Center and Cheongju Historic Museum of Baekje.
The Museum currently hosts the Executive Office of the International Association of Printing Museums (IAPM).
