The first Museum of Typography in Greece is located in Chania, Crete, in the heart of the Mediterranean sea. It is a private initiative by Yannis Garedakis, founder of the newspaper “Haniotika nea”, who has been collecting, for more than thirty years, machines and other exhibits that mark the evolution of typography in Europe. The museum opened to the public in 2005, with the aim to highlight Typography's historical value as a breakthrough in human history and to preserve printing machinery, tools, objects and old publications that are characteristic of the evolution of Typography and Printing in Europe. At the same time, through it's publications, research work and the collaborations it develops, the museum focuses in particular on the important role of Cretan scholars and printers in the early European printing history. The Museum is developed in a total area of approximately 1,200 sq.m., including two large wings, two exhibition rooms, its remarkable library, a museum shop, a coffee shop and a bright amphitheater with a capacity of 80 seats, which often hosts cultural events. |
