Experience the history of writing, books and printing "live": In the centre of Mainz's old town, opposite the cathedral, stands one of the oldest printing museums in the world. The World Museum of the Art of Printing is dedicated to the "man of the millennium" Johannes Gutenberg and his inventions, the global impact of which is still evident today and acknowledged in special exhibitions.

The renowned specialised museum was founded in 1900 by citizens of Mainz on the occasion of Johannes Gutenberg's 500th birthday to honour the inventor of printing with movable type and to exhibit, preserve and communicate his technical and artistic inventions. About 160,000 visitors from all over the world take advantage of this offer every year. Among those are about 25,000 children and teenagers. About 18,000 children and youngsters take part in the various programmes our print shop (Druckladen) has to offer. The Gutenberg-Museum is also represented at trade fairs like the Book Fair in Frankfurt and Leipzig and other events like the Science Market or the Johannisnacht in Mainz. About 18,000 visitors come to our stands at these fairs and events every year, in addition to our many visitors in the museum.

Medieval manuscripts, incunabula and historical prints, typesetting machines and printing presses are presented on approx. 3,500 square metres of exhibition space, as well as modern book culture, children's books, miniature books, luxury papers and binding art.

Among the museum's greatest treasures are two original Gutenberg Bibles from the mid-15th century. The Gutenberg workshop with the reconstructed Gutenberg press is also one of the main attractions. Here there is an almost hourly presentation of how printing was done in Gutenberg's day. A modern film, which can be shown in seven languages, introduces the life and work of Gutenberg. With the four-language audio guide you can get to know the highlights of the museum in German, English, French and Korean. Five additional tours lead through the departments “Books before Gutenberg”, “Early printing after Gutenberg”, “Paper and bookbinding”, “East Asia” and “Islamic book culture”.
